Supporting Disability Awareness Database

Description

Supporting Disability Awareness is an online, subscription-based database that includes 200+ resources on disabilities and inclusion, including books, videos, activities, and lesson plans. The content addresses autism spectrum, cognitive difference, deafness, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, social and emotional impairments, speech and language impairments, visual impairments, and more.

Recommendations

The strengths of this resource are:

  • the affordable, flexible, and well-organized platform
  • inclusion of excellent resources with direct relevance to Extension programming
  • inclusion of learning objectives with each activity and discussion guide
  • scoping and sequencing that allows lessons to build on one another
  • ease of transfer between users

Users should note that:

  • some of the activities may be challenging for facilitators to adapt based on youth participant needs

We think these things could help with the concerns:

  • including people with expertise in the topic of disability to act as guides/supports for educators and volunteers
